NNB GenCo, the operator of the UK's Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant, has decided to switch from its planned wet storage to dry storage. The UK's Environment Agency (EA) has launched a public consultation. NNB power said the change in spent fuel storage would have a minimal impact on emissions from the plant and radiation doses to the public. Meanwhile, the Sizewell B nuclear power plant in the United Kingdom has successfully operated a dry storage facility for spent fuel, which can provide experience for the project.
Two 1.63 mw European Pressurised Water Reactor (EPR) units are under construction at Hinkley Point C in the UK. The two units are scheduled to go into operation in 2026 and 2027, respectively. The two units are expected to generate 7,346 spent fuel assemblies during their 60-year operating life.
