Unit 3 of the Kakrapar nuclear power plant is expected to go into commercial operation in December 2022, according to India's Department of Atomic Energy. The unit is India's first indigenously designed 700,000 kW pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR). The Kakrapar Unit 3 finished loading in March 2020 and achieved its first criticality in July of that year. The unit was connected to the grid on Jan 10, 2021.
In April 2007, the Indian government approved the construction of Kakrapar units 3 and 4 and Rajasthan Nuclear Power Plant units 7 and 8. In January 2019, India's Department of Atomic Energy announced plans to put 21 new nuclear power units into operation by 2031, including 10 locally designed pressurized heavy water reactors with a total installed capacity of 15.7 GW.
