Spanish company Acciona Energia has once again set its sights on solar-thermal power generation by building a hybrid solar-thermal photovoltaic (PV) plant in Badajoz.
Acciona Energia has previously invested heavily in solar thermal power generation. It has also taken the technology to other markets, such as Chile and South Africa.
In 2018, it sold five solar thermal power stations it owned in Spain, selling a total of 250 megawatts to Countour Global for just over 1 billion euros.
The Spanish government earlier announced a plan for at least 200MW of solar-thermal power generation opportunities. Now Acciona Energia has decided to redevelop its solar-thermal power project in Spain.
The project, called Solbio 1, will have a total installed capacity of 135 megawatts and will be a hybrid photovoltaic and solar-thermal plant.
Solbio 1 is not the first project in Spain to mix solar thermal with photovoltaic. Earlier, Spanish company Sener announced the launch of Solgest 1, a 150-megawatt solar and photovoltaic power plant with thermal storage that can supply power to the grid 24 hours a day.
